A late-night traffic accident on Broadway in South Los Angeles last weekend has left one driver dead and a second critically injured. Police received a call at approximately 12:50 a.m. Friday of a multi-vehicle collision near the intersection of South Broadway and West 43th Street.

An investigation has determined that one vehicle was at a traffic stop on Broadway when another vehicle heading northbound on the street rear-ended it. The force of the impact caused the vehicles to collide into several unoccupied parked cars.

The driver of the stopped vehicle, Nicole Foster, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene following the collision. The other driver, who was operating a pickup truck, was sent to a hospital in critical condition.

Police have not yet identified drugs, alcohol or street racing as factors in the accident.

Tragedy that strikes from negligent drivers

The senseless aftermath of traffic accidents that cause bodily and property damage, as well as debilitating injury or death, to innocent victims can make a preventable event even more tragic. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), every day eight people are killed in accidents that have been caused by distracted or negligent drivers.

A distraction can be anything from reading or writing a cellphone text while driving, talking on the phone, or taking the hands off the wheel to adjust the mirrors or operate the controls of a GPS or music play station.

When distracted driving is combined with alcohol or other substances, the results are even more deadly. In 2018 alone, approximately 400,000 people were injured in automobile accidents involving a distracted driver, resulting in 2,800 deaths. Alcohol impairment contributes to about a third of all accidents annually as well.

Seeking healing or closure

When a serious automobile accident occurs, it changes everything in the blink of an eye. The victims and their families must deal with medical treatment or rehabilitation, or in the cast of loss from catastrophic injuries, funeral expenses and the emotional pain of loss. There are significant financial as well as emotional costs associated with a serious car accident that will not heal for a long time.

If you or a loved one has been the victim of a motor vehicle accident that was caused by the negligence of another driver, it is essential to call an experienced and knowledgeable personal injury attorney who can protect your rights and fight for the compensation that you deserve.
